Alpine Meats and Deli opened in 1980 and is run in the German tradition, by butchers with German training who speak the language. Most of what is in the cases is made on site the old-fashioned way, without unnatural preservatives: bratwurst, knackwurst, weisswurst, bauernwurst, kielbasa, landjäger and solinger (smoked, dried sausages), liverwurst, teewurst and more, much of it from the shop's two smokehouses. Leberkäse is baked fresh every morning, and the shop smokes its own cheeses and salmon. Bone-in beef hangs on hooks in a side cooler to age before it is cut to order, and beef, lamb and veal come in as whole pieces. The deli makes sandwiches, soups and salads, including German potato salad, and more than a room is given over to imported German foods. The shop also does custom butchering and wild game processing.
