Jacob Tanis Sr. settled here in 1910 and built Ideal Guernsey Cattle into a famous dairy herd; in the 1960s his son switched the farm to Aberdeen Angus beef, still raised here today, grass-fed and grain-finished with no hormones or antibiotics. In 1984 Jan Tanis-Jorritsma and her husband Ben opened Ideal Farm and Garden Centre in the farm's old bull barn, and their sons Benjamin and Kyle and Kyle's wife Lindsey now run the 200-acre farm with them; Kyle added a free-range chicken flock in 2020. The bakery makes apple cider donuts, 9-inch pies, artisan breads, tea breads and cookies, and the fields grow white and bicolor corn, tomatoes, peppers, melons and pumpkins.
