Sussex Meat Packing traces back to Andrew VandenAkker, a farmer and butcher in Holland who brought his family to the United States in 1957. His son Henry VandenAkker started the retail business in 1960 with a 6-foot meat case in a small shop on Route 565 in Wantage, and it is still family owned. Today it is a single store in the Wantage Plaza with a long service case: beef hand cut in house and never pre-packaged, ground round made several times a day, and fresh poultry that arrives daily and is never frozen. A deli kitchen makes lunch specials, family dinners and catering, and the shop has long served local farmers and hunters.
