Kurt Alstede, a Chester native and first-generation farmer, started Alstede Farms in 1982, and today he runs it with his children Rebekah, Sarah and Karl. The family farms about 600 acres, nearly all of it permanently preserved, and grows more than 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers, from strawberries and blueberries to peppers, potatoes, apples and pumpkins. The farm says it is the largest certified organic farm in Morris County. Its farm store bakes pies, pot pies, quiches and cider donuts and makes its own ice cream, and the farm also runs a CSA and sells at farmers markets across North Jersey.
